Silly Sentences is a simple board game designed to learn the parts of speech. Talk about what goes into a complete sentence with your child (you always need a subject and a verb). You can make up silly sentences or sentences that make sense. The sentences need only follow the rules of grammar.

The object of the game is to be the first person to build three complete silly sentences.

Hand out ten of the green word pieces to each player. These will help you build a sentence.

Roll the die, and follow the directions on the board. If you are banished to the Tower of I Forgot, you must wait there for one turn. If you are sent to the candy oval, collect a piece of candy and return to the square. Sometimes the candy runs out! See the Game Keeper if this happens.

To play Silly Sentences at home: Use the word lists to come up with words. Include words from your child's spelling lists and reading textbooks. Write the words on firm paper, card stock or index cards. Another good game to help your child learn the parts of speech is Mad Libs. You can find Mad Libs at drugstores, toy stores and learning supply stores.
